Q. Dr. Patricia Berg is a doctor at George Washington University, and she is in Washington this morning and joins us
now. Hello to you, Doctor.
A. Hello, Heidi.
Q. This is an exciting find. Tell us what it does, indeed mean for diagnosis and treatment.
A. As a scientist and the mother of a daughter, I want to help do something about the 212,000 women in the U.S. who
will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and the 40,000 who will die of the disease. We have discovered a new
gene which we just found is in 80% of breast tumors. We think this gene is a good potential target for therapy and early
detection.
Q. How does it work? How can this be used to fight breast cancer then?
A. Well, if we can target the gene with drugs, then it could be used in that way to turn the gene off. In fact, in the lab,
we have found several drugs that will do this. In addition, as you may know, the gene is expressed very highly in the
tumors of African-American women. It is expressed in 89% of those women compared to 57% of Caucasian women.
Q. Is it true that one of the findings of the study is that not necessarily is breast cancer more common in
African-American women, but when they get it, it proves more fatal.
A. That`s exactly right. The reason for this is not understood. It is understood that social economic factors play a role,
but once those are taken in to account there is still a differential.
Q. So the discovery of this gene does provide some new hope for early detection?
A. Yes. We`re working now with a breast surgeon at George Washington University to try to develop a blood test for
the disease which would be much easier than (taking) tissue (samples). (We are) also developing a treatment.
Q. What is the next step as far as the presence of this gene is concerned?
A. We`re doing a lot of molecular studies in the lab, (so) we know something about how this gene acts. It seems to
encourage the growth of cells and prevent them from dying and has them grow indefinitely, which is a signature of a
cancer gene, and we`re hoping to develop a pharmaceutical partner who would have the expertise and knowledge to
screen a number of drugs that may be effective.
Q. Dr. Patricia Berg, I`m sure this is a very exciting find for you.

called BP1 offers a promising lead. But other experts say the study was too small to see whether BP1 has any role in
breast cancer. 21.27

15.26 The researchers say their findings about a specific gene may help all breast cancer patients, but especially
African-American women. The finding centers on a gene called BP1. In a preliminary study, Dr. Patricia Berg, a
researcher at George Washington University, found BP1 was active or turned on in 80% of women with breast cancer.
Dr. Patricia Berg, study researcher: "This is a very high number -- unusually high. And so we`re pursuing that aspect of
it as a possible target for therapy in these women." In past studies, Dr. Berg found BP1 in leukemia patients. But it`s
the first time it has been found to be active in breast cancer patients, especially black women. The study showed the
gene was switched on in nine out of ten black women with breast cancer among white women, the rate was 57%. But
researchers can`t explain the disparity. (Dr. Patricia Berg, study researcher: "That`s a question we`re researching in the
laboratory." The research team hopes to work with a drug company to find a treatment. "If we can use drugs that attack
BP1 and shut it off, perhaps the breast tumors can regress." 16.33

14.37 If the finding is confirmed, it could lead to new ways to detect and treat the disease. Reporter: a small study of
tissue from 46 breast cancer patients found activity of a gene dubbed BP1 in 80% of the tumor. Another striking
finding is that the rate of expression of BP1 among African-American women with breast cancer is 89% compared
with 57% in Caucasian women. Reporter: BP1 was also active in 100% of the hard-to-treat tumors, cancers that don`t
have estrogen receptors and don`t respond to drugs like tamoxifen. And if this holds, this could be very significant that
we might then find, through BP1, a molecular target forest general receptor-negative breast cancers. Reporter: while
these initial findings look promising, cancer experts stress the study was far too small to confirm the role of BP1 in
breast cancer. It`s preliminary, but I think it`s exciting in the sense that it may give us some new clues, new directions
for new molecular targets. Reporter: researchers at George Washington University say they now plan more studies to
explore the possible role of BP1 in breast cancer and are working to develop a blood test to detect it. 16.21

54.00 An encouraging finding in the fight against breast cancer. That`s right, today researchers in Washington
announced they`ve discovered a certain gene may provide important clues in the detection and the treatment of breast
cancer. "Action news" Washington DC Alex Lee has the story. Reporter: their study into a specifically gene may
ultimately help all women with breast cancer but especially African-American women. The new finding centers on a
gene called BP1, in a preliminary study, Dr. Patricia Berg a researcher at George Washington University found it was
active or turned on in 80% of women with breast cancer. This is a very high number, unusually high and so we`re
pursuing that aspect of it as a possible target for therapy in these women. Reporter: in past studies, Dr. Berg found it in
leukemia patients but the first time it has been found to be active in breast cancer patients, especially black women. The
study showed the gene was switched on in nine out of ten black women with breast cancer. Among white women, the
rate was 57% but researchers can`t explain the difference. That`s a question we`re researching in the laboratory.
Reporter: her team hopes to work with a drug company to find a treatment. 57.01

15.03 From our exclusive Washington DC bureau, Alex Lee has the story. Cynthia, the researchers say their findings
about a specific gene may help all breast cancer patients, but especially African-American women. The finding centers
on a gene called BP1. In a preliminary study, Dr. Patricia Berg, a researcher at George Washington University, found
BP1 was active or turned on in 80% of women with breast cancer. "This is a very high number unusually high. And so
we`re pursuing that aspect of it as a possible target for therapy in these women." In past studies, Dr. Berg found BP1 in
leukemia patients. But it`s the first time it has been found to be active in breast cancer patients, especially black women.
The study showed the gene was switched on in nine out of ten black women with breast cancer among white women,
the rate was 57%. But researchers can`t explain the disparity. "That`s a question we`re researching in the laboratory."
The research team hopes to work with a drug company to find a treatment. 16.10

25.01 Breast cancer strikes more white women than blacks, but the disease is often deadlier in African-Americans.
Socioeconomic factors like access to early detection and treatment play a role, and now scientists have uncovered signs
pointing to the possibility of a genetic risk factor. A small study of tissue from 46 breast cancer patients found activity
of a gene dubbed BP1 in 80% of the tumors.
Patricia Berg, Ph.D., cancer researcher, George Washington University Medical Center: "Another striking finding is
rate of expression of gene in black women is 89% compared to 57% in white women." BP1 was also active in 100% of
the "hard to treat tumors", cancers that don`t have estrogen receptors and don`t respond to drugs like tamoxifen.
Barbara Vonderhaar, Ph.D., National Cancer Institute: "If this holds, this could be very significant that we might then
find thru BP1 a molecular target for estrogen receptor negative breast cancers." While these initial findings look
promising, cancer experts stress that the study was far too small to confirm the role of BP1 in breast cancer.

explore the possible role of BP1 in breast cancer and are working to develop a blood test to detect it.
