(Santa Clara, CA) - Mary Alexander, President of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, will address the commencement ceremony of Santa Clara University School of Law Saturday, May 24, at 10:30 AM, in Mission Gardens of the SCU campus.

Alexander will also be a recipient of Santa Clara School of Law's Alumni Special Achievement Award the evening before, on Friday, May 23, with a reception at 6:00 PM at the Brass Rail, Benson Center.

Alexander is an '82 alum of the Santa Clara School of Law. She lives in Atherton, CA, has a law practice in San Francisco, and directs the nation's largest trial lawyers organization, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Alexander is a recognized national champion of the rights of victims and consumers and is regularly asked by media to comment on administration and congressional actions. Alexander states, "We must empower consumers to fight back against giant corporations who try to take away our rights. If it were not for the nation's trial lawyers, I'd hate to think of what corporations would get away with in environmental, health, safety, and product standards. The attorneys who devote their lives to justice for consumers are far too rarely given credit for protecting America and its citizens. Unfortunately, even as we speak, the battle for consumers' rights is being threatened more than ever. Congress is deciding these issues, and we must act."

"I remember fondly my years at Santa Clara School of Law, and I first learned the importance of fighting for what is right. I know all the students here will take away from their law school years a commitment to battle for their clients with all the tools that the law allows, including a keen moral compass. That was the message Santa Clara School of Law gave to me, and it is just as important for today's students."
